Araxos Airport History

The Airport of Araxos belonged to Hellenic Air Force. The construction started secretly in the early 30s. It was used by the Hellenic Air Force for the first time in 1936 and in 1941 was installed there the first radar base, in Greece and in the same year (1941) began to serve military aircrafts. In 1958, it was decided to make further modernization of the airport in order to serve and jets. The airport until the mid -90’s was a military airport and since 1997 works as a civilian airport.
